So how does it work?

Brain entrainment uses frequency, light, and sound to influence brainwave activity. Think of your brain like a radio: your brainwaves are the stations, with different stations for sleep, focus, or relaxation. Brain entrainment helps you “change the station” when stress, anxiety, or fatigue make it difficult on your own.

The BrainTap headset combines multiple forms of brain entrainment in one system. It delivers binaural beats, isochronic tones, and guided audio to create specific brainwave patterns. At the same time, gentle light pulses through the visor and photobiomodulation in the earpieces stimulate the brain and nervous system. This taps into the brain’s natural frequency-following response, guiding you into calmer and more balanced states.

The PEMF mat works differently but complements BrainTap. PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy) delivers low-frequency electromagnetic pulses that interact with the body at a cellular level. These pulses support energy production in the cells (ATP), improve circulation, and help regulate the autonomic nervous system. In simple terms, it’s like giving your cells a “recharge,” helping the body reset and recover more effectively.

When used together, BrainTap and PEMF create a dual approach — one working primarily through the brain and nervous system, the other through cellular and physiological pathways — to support whole-system recovery and resilience.

How quickly can I get results?

Many people notice changes within the first few sessions, often in areas like sleep quality, recovery, or how manageable daily stress feels.

Your program is structured from your HRV assessment at the first appointment, which means the schedule is tailored to what your nervous system shows it needs. In some cases this may mean sessions close together for a short period; in others, a steadier pace is recommended. The goal is always to balance best practice with what’s realistic for your life.

Both BrainTap and PEMF contribute to these changes through different pathways. BrainTap helps the brain shift between states more effectively, while PEMF supports energy production, circulation, and cellular recovery.

When the nervous system regains the flexibility to move smoothly between “on” (sympathetic) and “off” (parasympathetic) states, the body recovers faster, sleep becomes more restorative, and daily challenges feel easier to handle. Without this flexibility, stress can trap the body in overdrive, leading to exhaustion, anxiety, and burnout.

How do I know which program to choose?

The Dual-Tech Recovery Program provides the most comprehensive support. By combining BrainTap and PEMF in each session, it offers the broadest impact on nervous system recovery, with progress measured through your HRV assessments.

The Structured Reset Program uses BrainTap alone and is well-suited for individuals who want a focused approach to rebalancing their nervous system without the additional layer of PEMF.

The Family Calm Program is designed for households where more than one member is affected. Supporting parent and child (or siblings) together strengthens co-regulation, helps build calmer routines at home, and models healthy habits.

All programs are structured around your HRV data and availability, so your plan is tailored to your needs rather than a fixed timetable.

 

Our Clinic is open 7am-7pm Monday to Friday and 7am-2pm Saturdays, so we session times to fit the busiest schedules.

What is HRV?

At Neurobalance Clinic, we use Heart Rate Variability (HRV) testing to both guide your program and track your progress.

HRV is the variation in time between your heartbeats. A higher HRV is consistently linked to better stress resilience, vagal tone, and overall health outcomes. By looking at HRV, we can see the balance between your sympathetic system (fight or flight) and parasympathetic system (rest and digest).

How is it used in clinic?

  • At your first session, HRV testing provides a baseline and helps us design your treatment timetable. This means your schedule is tailored to your nervous system, not set to a fixed routine.

  • HRV is then measured at intervals throughout your program. These assessments show how your nervous system is adapting, highlight changes in regulation, and ensure your plan continues to match your progress.

In simple terms, HRV gives us a measurable way to see how well your nervous system is recovering — so every program is personalised, data-driven, and trackable over time.

What if my child can't sit still?

This is a really common concern, and the sessions can be adapted to ensure that sessions are as easy as possible for people. Children can use BrainTap with the visor up, sitting with a parent, lying down, or playing quietly with a toy or fidget. We also have toys, books, teddies and weighted blankets at the Clinic.

Because the technology works passively, they don't need to actively participate to benefit.

We often notice that children, especially those with higher needs, quickly begin to associate the calm they feel with the BrainTap, and sessions become easier (dare we say, they even enjoy them!).

What happens at the end of the program?

At your final session, we review your HRV assessments and provide a clear report showing changes across the program. Together, we’ll discuss both the measurable metrics and the improvements you’ve noticed in daily life.

From there, we recommend the most suitable next steps:

  • Some people continue with regular in-clinic sessions to maintain progress.

  • Others return for shorter “top-up” programs when needed.

  • Families with ongoing needs may choose to establish an at-home system, with our guidance and support.

The aim is always to create a sustainable support plan that fits your life and helps maintain nervous system balance long-term.

How does this work with medication or other therapies?

Our programs are complementary to many other therapies. Counselling, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy etc require engagement and executive functioning skills to be effective. However, stress and anxiety are known to impair those functions. Therefore, BrainTap and PEMF, and their ability to shift the mind and body into calmer states, can support other therapies.

BrainTap and PEMF have no known contraindications with medications. However, there are certain health conditions that make them unsuitable for some people. Please see "Is it safe for everyone?" for specific contraindications.

Is this safe for everyone?

BrainTap and PEMF are safe for most people, including children from age five upwards.

  • BrainTap should not be used by people with a history or epilepsy or seizures triggered by light, or those with severe photosensitivity. If you have suffered a traumatic brain injury, you must be cleared by a health professional before starting a program.
  • PEMF should not be used by anyone with a pacemaker or implanted electronic device, during pregnancy, or with active bleeding disorders.
  • HRV testing is not suitable for people with pacemakers or implanted cardiac devices. You can still fully participate in a BrainTap program, and we will adapt the way we measure your progress.

Is the covered under the NDIS?

Neurobalance Clinic is currently working toward NDIS registration and will launch counselling services in 2026.

You can apply to our waitlist via THIS LINK.

In the meantime, some self-managed and plan-managed participants may be able to claim services. We cannot manage this process for you but are happy to provide special invoicing to assist with your process.

I have a degree in psychology and years of experience working with some of the best health technologies in the world. But most importantly, I'm a single mum of 2 with the messy lived experience of supporting anxious kids, while trying to support my own nervous system health.
